Sealcoating is a valuable service that often gets overlooked until it's too late. It's easy to take for granted that black pavement underfoot but if you're the guy that paid for it, you know it's something you want to preserve and conserve. Sealcoating is the best way to reduce your cost over time. Add to that the curb appeal that new sealcoating and striping bring to your business and it's an investment not to be taken lightly.

Sealcoating Roulette!

in Seal Coaters Seal Coating

“CHOOSE YOUR SEAL COATER!” Welcome to the game show in which this spring you will choose the seal coating contractor to do your asphalt. Choose right and you get a wonderful job that lasts a long time. Choose wrong, and watch your hard earned money go down the drain.

Let’s get started.  Contractor number one is a seal coater that just started sealing.  He has couple of 55 gallon drums in the back of his truck and his best friend since first grade helping him.  Contractor number two has been doing business in the area for several years and can provide examples of his work.  His sealing crew has been working for this company for several years.  Contractor number three just came knocking on your front door offering a great deal on sealing you drive.

Ask each contractor “What kind of material do the use?”  Contractor one doesn’t know.  He uses whatever the supplier gives him.  Contractor two tells you that he uses a refined coal tar sealer which is better than an asphalt emulsion sealer.  Contractor three avoids the question all together and says you better hurry on the deal because he is leaving this afternoon.

OK! Choose!  You pick contractor number two?  You Win!  This contractor has been doing asphalt in your area for over twenty years, knows the difference between the types of material used and picks one that will last a long time, and has an experienced crew to do a neat, clean job.  Contractor one is still learning the business and wanted to use you as someone to practice on.  Contractor number three is what is known as an”asphalt gypsie” and rips people off for the quick buck.

Congratulations! You win!  Please keep the name and number of contractor number two on file so you can call him the next time you have your drive done.  Thank you for playing.
